DANDI DALEY MACKALL - The Inside Scoop

STARLIGHT ANIMAL RESCUE - Where problem horses are trained and loved, where abandoned dogs become heroes, where stray cats become loyal companions…and where people with nowhere to fit in find a place to belong.

I've run away seven times-never once to anything, just away from. Maybe that's why they call me a "runaway,"and not a "run-to."

Meet Dakota Brown. She used to love all things "horse" until she lost everything, including hope. But can an impossible horse named Blackfire and a quirky collection of animal lovers be the home she's dreamed of? RUNAWAY kicks off the series, as new characters mix with Winnie and Catman in all new adventures.

MAD DOG - If the world had any idea how mad I, Wesley "Mad Dog" Williams, am at it, the sun would be too scared to show its ugly face around here.

Meet Wes, aka Mad Dog. He's from Chicago and looking to return-just as soon as his mother gets out of rehab. In the meantime, he's stuck at Starlight Animal Rescue, where a dog named Rex just might make it his mission to rescue Wes.

Thanks again to all of you Winnie the Horse Gentler fans, who've faithfully written me, demanding that I bring back Winnie and the crew. The eight Winnie books in that series have been translated into several languages and continue to be bestsellers in the U.S. Thanks for spreading the word! In this new series, you get to meet some interesting characters, who e-mail Winnie and Catman and Barker for advice on the Pet Helpline. And (secret, secret!) Winnie and Catman come back in Book Four, older now, seniors in high school, with new challenges of their own.

BATBOY UP!

A Girl Named Dan … finally got to be batboy (sort of)!

On April 23rd, I got to take the field with the K.C. Royals in their home game against the Cleveland Indians. The team had invited me to be honorary batboy, righting a 40-year-old wrong and making up for the prize I was denied as a Missouri tomboy when I won the "Why I Want to Be Batboy" contest. When I arrived with daughter Katy in K.C., an official Royals jersey was waiting for me, with "Dandi" on the back and "37" on the front. The number stands for the number of words in Title IX, the law that said girls could play, too. The game was eventually rained out, but even the showers couldn't dampen the joy of the night, as I got to hang out with the team during the rain delay, and even pick up a couple of balls. (My husband, a lifelong Indians fan, was relieved that he wouldn't have to watch me root against the Tribe on national TV.)
